SRECs are based on energy production, but some state programs allow production to be estimated rather than reported from actual energy production. Systems on production estimates do not have to report actual energy production.
What systems are eligible for production estimates?
Certain systems in the Maryland and Washington, D.C. SREC markets are allowed to use production estimates.
How are estimates calculated?
Production estimates are calculated by a grid operator, such as PJM-GATS, using a tool like PV Watts.
Estimates are calculated from system specifications such as:
- Capacity (Watts) and quantity of panels
- Panel tilt
- Panel azimuth (orientation)
- Latitude
Can estimates be turned off?
Production estimates are generally accurate and provide systems with the appropriate amount of SRECs. However, systems can be converted to report actual energy production if SRECs are being underestimated.
Can estimates be turned on?
No. If your system is fully registered and is not set up for production estimates, you will need to continue to report actual energy production by self-reporting or setting up remote monitoring.
