Legacy SRECs can likely be sold
If you signed up with another SREC aggregator or broker before transferring to Sol Systems, your SRECs may have already been awarded by your grid operator (such as PJM-GATS). Sol Systems may be able to sell these "Legacy SRECs" and issue payment to the current solar system owner. SRECs generally expire after 3 years (and become more difficult to sell as they approach expiration) so it's generally best to sell them sooner rather than later.
Note: If you're signing up to sell SRECs for the first time, you do not have legacy SRECs. Please refer to our article on "SRECs from Past Energy Production" instead. However, if you're transferring your current SREC management to Sol Systems, read on.
SRECs generated outside of a contract
SRECs cannot be sold without an active contract. However, once your system is under contract with Sol Systems, previously generated SRECs can be sold by our team during the appropriate trading periods throughout the year.
Any SRECs generated before the effective date of your Sol Systems contract are not under contractual obligations. This means that SRECs generated outside of a contract may be sold at a rate determined by our trading team (generally the current market rate).
SRECs under another contract may not be allowed to transfer
If your system was previously under contract with another aggregator, you may be unable to have them transferred until that contract expires or is terminated. Please consult with your previous aggregator to determine if you have unsold SRECs under contract.
Transferring SRECs
SRECs in PJM can only be transferred by a GATS account holder.
If your installer or another SREC aggregator signed you up for SRECs, they are likely the GATS account holder and will need to follow the below instructions on your behalf.
If you are the GATS account holder, please follow these instructions.
How to transfer SRECs in GATS
Log in to your GATS account at https://www.pjm-eis.com/.
Hover over “Certificates,” then click “REC Transfer.”
Select Transfer Certificates to: "Another Account Holder" then select "Sol Systems, LLC" from the drop-down menu. Then select "Spot Market" under Transfer Type. Then click "Next."
Click "Select All RECs" if you're transferring all SRECs on your account. (If not, click the check box for each SREC that you’d like to transfer.) Then click “Next.”
Enter 0.00 under "Default Price" and then click "GO." (Note this field is simply for GATS data recording purposes. It is not the agreed price for which Sol Systems will buy your SRECs.) Then click "Next."
Click "Submit" on the final page.
Transferred SRECs will appear in your Sol Systems account
If you've already transferred your system to Sol Systems, your legacy SRECs will appear in your Sol Systems Dashboard once their transfer is complete.
Transfer your system to sell SRECs going forward
If you haven't already, transfer your system to Sol Systems so new SRECs can be sold and paid to you. To do so, sign up at srecs.solsystems.com and begin registering your system.
