System Expansion: Maryland, DC, New Jersey, and Virginia

Completing a system expansion for my solar system located in MD, DC, NJ, VA

How do I complete a system expansion for my solar system? (MD, DC, NJ, VA)

If you have added panels or increased the size of your solar system, this is considered a system expansion. To continue generating and selling SRECs, your system must be updated and approved by the state and GATS.

*Please note that if the new panels feed into the same utility meter, it is a system expansion. In most cases, it does and it is very rare to add panels that feed a different utility meter*

What information does Sol Systems need?

To process a system expansion, Sol Systems will request updated system details and documentation based on your state.

In general, you may be asked to provide:

  • Updated system size (capacity)
  • A signed expansion agreement (DocuSign)
  • Additional documents depending on your state

What documents are required by state?

Maryland

  • Signed Certificate of Completion (also known as interconnection agreement) showing total system capacity (existing + new panels)

Washington, DC

  • Interconnection agreement

New Jersey

  • No additional state documentation is required
  • Sol Systems will proceed with internal updates and GATS submission

Virginia

  • No additional state documentation is required unless we are selling your SRECs in the PA Tier I market
  • Sol Systems will notify you if documentation is needed

Do not forget to attach the required documents depending on your state. At the minimum, we will always need an interconnection agreement.

What happens after I submit my documents?

Once all required documentation is received:

  • Sol Systems submits your expansion to the appropriate state authority
  • Your system details are updated in GATS (the SREC tracking system)
  • Your system must be approved by both the state and GATS before generating SRECs at the new capacity

Will my SREC production be affected?

Yes, temporarily.

  • If your system uses production estimates and remains under 10 kW in MD or DC, it may be temporarily paused in GATS to prevent incorrect SREC minting
  • Once approved, your system will resume normal SREC generation at the updated size

What if I added a second meter?

If your expansion includes a new meter:

  • You may need to report multiple meter readings or add them together to get the new total

How long does the process take?

System expansions can take several weeks to a few months, depending on:

  • State approval timelines
  • GATS processing time
  • How quickly Sol Systems receives accurate information

What happens once my expansion is approved?

After approval:

  • Your updated system size will be reflected in GATS
  • You will begin generating SRECs based on your new system capacity
  • Sol Systems will notify you once the expansion is fully approved
