Transferring Legacy SRECs to Sol Systems

In many cases, legacy SRECs can still be sold.

If you previously worked with another SREC aggregator or broker, your SRECs may have already been created by your grid operator (such as PJM’s Generation Attribute Tracking System (GATS)). Sol Systems may be able to sell these legacy SRECs and issue payment to the current owner of the solar system.

Because SRECs typically expire after three years and become harder to sell as they approach expiration, it is generally best to sell them as soon as possible.

Do I have legacy SRECs?

You may have legacy SRECs if:

  • You previously worked with another SREC aggregator or broker, and

  • Your system generated SRECs before transferring to Sol Systems

If you are signing up to sell SRECs for the first time, you do not have legacy SRECs. 

Can SRECs generated outside a contract be sold?

SRECs cannot be sold without an active contract. However, once your system is under contract with Sol Systems, previously generated SRECs may be sold during applicable trading periods.

SRECs generated before the effective date of your Sol Systems contract are not bound by contract pricing. These SRECs may be sold at a rate determined by Sol Systems’ trading team, generally based on current market conditions.

What if my SRECs are under another contract?

If your system was previously under contract with another aggregator, your SRECs may not be eligible for transfer until that contract has expired or been terminated.

You should contact your prior aggregator to confirm whether:

  • Any SRECs remain unsold, and

  • Those SRECs are free of contractual restrictions

Who can transfer SRECs in GATS?

In PJM, only the GATS account holder can transfer SRECs.

  • If your installer or prior aggregator set up your system, they are likely the GATS account holder and must complete the transfer on your behalf

  • If you are the GATS account holder, you may transfer the SRECs yourself by following the steps below

How do I transfer SRECs in GATS?

  1. Log in to your GATS account at https://www.pjm-eis.com

  2. Hover over Certificates, then click REC Transfer

  3. Select Transfer Certificates to: Another Account Holder

  4. Choose Sol Systems, LLC from the drop-down menu

  5. Select Spot Market as the Transfer Type and click Next

  6. Select the SRECs you wish to transfer

    • Click Select All RECs to transfer all SRECs, or

    • Select individual certificates

  7. Enter 0.00 under Default Price and click GO

    • This value is for GATS recordkeeping only and is not the price Sol Systems will pay

  8. Click Next, then Submit

When will transferred SRECs appear in my Sol Systems account?

If your system is already registered with Sol Systems, transferred legacy SRECs will appear in your Sol Systems Dashboard once the transfer is complete.

How do I sell SRECs going forward?

If you have not already done so, you will need to transfer your system to Sol Systems in order to sell future SRECs and receive payments.
